we are several University Institutes with each 20-100 staff members. Our University has no centralized Directory Service. Some Departments use their own Active Directory and i want to install some UCS Servers for the other. Problem is that we are not allowed to use our own DNS-Server. The University has an central DNS and DHCP Server. Active Directory works fine without own DNS. But can we do the same with UCS? Is it possible to use samba without its own DNS?

Hi,
in case you will do manual syncing of the DNS entries needed by UCS this should be possible. Your centralized DNS server should call himself as “authoritative” for your UCS domain. Besides of the usual name records you should also make sure to create all needed SRV and TXT records.
