Server Hardware change / migration

Hi there,
at the moment, UCS 4.9 can’t be updated because there is not enough space free on /boot (94 MB). Old kernels are still pruned.

The plan is, to set up a DC Backup, add it to the existing UCS domain and then grant the DC Backup to DC Master.

Question: Which UCS version should be used for the new DC Backup? The same like the master runs (4.9) or the latest available (5.0 and then update it to 5.0-3)

What Univention say on this…

In environments with more than one UCS system, the update order of the UCS systems must be borne in mind:
The authoritative version of the LDAP directory service is maintained on the Primary Directory Node (formerly referred to as master domain controller) and replicated to all the remaining LDAP servers of the UCS domain. As changes to the LDAP schema can occur during release updates, the Primary Directory Node must always be the first system to be updated during a release update.

So reading that would indicate you cannot do a DC backup with later SW than the Master.
so maybe put your DC backup at 4.9

can you not find some down time and just make your /boot larger… either :

  1. with “gparted”
2 by making a new boot partition, copying the old one’s contents over (you can do this hot), then modify the fstab
file to hand over on the next reboot.

OK thanks, that’s logical. I want to upgrade also the server hardware so increasing the /boot partition will not be an option.

I will install the same version for the new DC Backup server like running on the master DC and then when everything is stable grant the Backup to DM Master.

Thanks for the useful hint.
