Relationship between UCS & Windows Printer Drivers

When creating a shared printer to be shared with Windows clients there are three steps:

  1. Create the printer in UCS
  2. Upload the driver in pintmanagement
  3. Associate the driver with the printer in printmanagement

How is the UCS printer driver specified in step (1) linked to the Windows printer driver in step (3). Meaning does it work as long as I specify the correct driver in Windows and if so can I use any driver in UCS?

The drivers defined in Step 1 are only used when printing directly through CUPS. Some functions in UCS@School are making use of it and in theory it is possible to configure Non-Windows clients for CUPS.
You are correct that for Windows clients the PPDs are not needed. AFAIK thats the reason why one can use the vendor “misc” and the model “smb”.

Hi Dirk and thank you for your response.

I am having problems getting the printer working in Windows and your comment helps greatly as I can now simplify this and remove UCS as being the problem by using “misc” and “smb”. Now I can focus on the Windows side of things.

p.s. I am guessing printing works in Windows and I am not on a wild goose chase here

Hey Dirk,

I have problems installing any drivers in the UCS via printermanagement.msc. Would you know if I need specific permissions to be able to do it?

As far as I know “SePrintOperatorPrivilege” is the permission to look for.
Usually this is defined by default to the “Administrator” account (see 54156 – 96univention-samba4.inst grant SePrintOperatorPrivilege) .
