Prerequisite for the usage of UCS Domain Services and UCS@school is a valid UCS Subscription.
Does it mean that it is not allowed to use the UCS Domain Services with the core edition?
For example, can I use the LDAP service on the core edition for user login/authentication on a linux workstation in my network? If yes, do I need to pay license for every user I create in UCS?
then I assume that for each LDAP user I create in UCS regardless of subscription type, a fee of US $ 18.50 / year applies?
We are looking for a replacement for the LDAP server we currently use for centralized user management in our company. Most users work on linux workstation. I tried a few solutions like Nethserver, Zentyal and the likes. I find UCS the best from what I have tested so far. However the licensing fee per user make it over our budget. Is there any workaround or solution? For example, can I use UCS with an external LDAP backend?

No, you either use the free UCS Core Edition, which does have some limitations on the access of updates (6 vs. 12 months of updates for certain releases) and no support from Univention. OR you get the paid subscription, then again you need to get a subscription for all your UCS servers and users.
Some Apps from the App Center require you to be on the paid subscription. I don’t remember if that applies to UCS@School. You might have to install it on the Core Edition and see if there is a demo limitation or not. (Or ask Univention directly)
Also: Schools get discounted subscriptions rates, so that’s also something to consider if you are looking at UCS@school.
