QA: Why is my Univention Bugzilla account registration canceled immediately?

Question

When I try to create an account in Univention Bugzilla, I receive an email with the subject “Univention Bugzilla: confirm account creation”. A few seconds later, I receive another email with the subject “account token canceled”.
I have not canceled the registration myself. Why does this happen, and how can I complete the registration?

Answer

This can happen when an automated link checker in your email infrastructure opens the links contained in the confirmation email. Spam filters, antivirus scanners, and other email security services may visit these URLs to inspect them.
The confirmation email contains links for both continuing and canceling the account registration. These links behave differently.
Account creation link
https://forge.univention.org/bugzilla/token.cgi?t=<TOKEN>&a=request_new_account
Opening this link displays the account creation page. Completing the registration requires additional information to be submitted through a form using an HTTP POST request.
Cancellation link
https://forge.univention.org/bugzilla/token.cgi?t=<TOKEN>&a=cancel_new_account
Opening this link cancels the registration token immediately through an HTTP GET request. No additional form submission is required.
If an automated scanner visits both links, its request to the cancellation URL invalidates the registration token. Bugzilla then sends the “account token canceled” email, even though you did not manually cancel the registration.

How can I complete the registration?

  1. Ask your email administrator to check whether a spam filter, antivirus scanner, or link-checking service automatically visits URLs in incoming emails.
  2. Once this has been addressed, start a new registration at Univention Bugzilla (Create a new Univention Bugzilla account).
  3. Open the account creation link in the new confirmation email and complete the registration form.
