since the latest Update 04/2026 of one Windows 11 client we can’t print on one old printer anymore. After the update the printer-spooler went down and coludn’t be started again. It took a little time to find out which driver caused the problem. It is the Lexmark C912 printer driver. This is a very old printer but it works fine and have a lot of options installed (5 paper tray, duplex, finisher). So i prefere to keep this printer as long as it works. I found out that the 04/2026 update blocks some drivers that are not “save” and so for the future Windows won’t print on this machine.
So here is the question: Is it possible to run a printserver on the UCS and print from Windows with a universal driver which provides the features of the printer. I don’t need a defined color for publishing newspaper but i need color/grayscale, the paper tray with different papersize and duplex. If possible the finisher but this is optional.
I cannot check whether this particular printer is supported. But you can use UCS/UCS@school system roles as a print server.
For this purpose, CUPS must be installed on the desired UCS system role via the AppCenter. Alternatively, run univention-install univention-printserver via the command line.
After a re-login in the web frontend, you have two new UMC modules in the portal folder ‘Devices’. One for setting up and configuring the printers, the other for the printer queue.
Further information can be found here. There details and other functions such as printer groups, shares and permissions are described.
The client-side connection for Windows 10 clients is described here.
Please note: Since the last upgrade for Windows 10 and by default starting with Windows 11, Microsoft has restricted or prohibited the ability for non-administrative user accounts to start the driver installation due to the Printer Nightmare. Point and print then no longer work.
If the old behavior is to be used anyway (Danger!), the Windows client can be modified via printer GPOs so that users can still install drivers.
I will soon publish a help article explaining the procedure for a rollback and the new approach using the MOPRIA standard with ipp. This should soon make the driver problem history.
Yes please… can we have the MOPRIA article asap? The printer driver thing is making me crazy, I really never managed to fully install a networked/shared printer. Errors related to the driver versions were mostly the problem.
