Business printer unable to connect to lan after upgrade

I performed a UCS upgarde from 4.3 to 4.4 for a client and since then their printer is unable to connect to the network share.
The printer is a Sharp mx3100n multifunction, and I had a scan to network folder setup which they used regularly. Now the printer has an error message about username / password incorrect, which I know it isn’t. I have tried changing which user it logs in with, and even made a new user to try and sort it out.
I found a thread about the smb protocol being outdated and maybe the firmware needs updating, but I would like confirmation that this is what has changed on the server, and if we can allow the older protocol.
