I’m looking for an app to manage guest virtual machines that I need to setup on my server, preferably using kvm, but I’ll consider VirtualBox or other alternatives.
I’ve seen references to an app called Univention Virtual Machine Manager (UVMM), but it doesn’t appear to be listed in the App Center on my UCS server (I’m using UCS 5.2).
Is UVMM still available/supported? If so, how do I install it? If not, are there any other apps available?
If there are no VM management apps available, and I need to manually install and configure the associated VM software, what do I need to take care of to ensure that there’s no interference with UCS? (I’m guessing the setting up bridged networking in my guest VMs could be problematic.)
Thanks for any assistance and suggestions you may have!
Support for virtualization was discontinued in UCS a long time ago.
But of course, you can use KVM/Qemu with, for example, virsh on the command line.
Otherwise, I can also recommend Proxmox VE for virtualization.
I’ve been running all my UCS VMs on Proxmox VE for many years, and I’m very satisfied with it.
Just to be clear, I’m not running UCS as a guest VM on another machine; UCS would be my host machine in my case. Does Proxmox VE run on a UCS host machine without any issues? My primary concern would be things like the configuration for guest VM bridged networking clashing with UCS’s network configuration.
UPDATE: Oops… It looks like Proxmox VE is a standalone VM server host with it’s own custom Linux kernel. Ah, well. Maybe that would work in any case… Thanks again for the suggestion.
